You vs You

It is without a doubt that all of us aspire to live our best life. Whatever "the best life" may mean to each one of us, it is for certain we all would want to achieve our goals, take care of our families, be a better spouse, get a good job or maybe start a business and so forth. These are the basics we all aspire to. Yet most of us fall short, and that is okay, it happens. Sometimes you plan to reach for the stars and so many things in life can happen to impede your progress, and guess what; none of us is immune. Poverty, poor health, unstable economic conditions and even people can get in the way of your plans and progress, in turn affecting your life negatively.

But what if I told you, of all the things that can impact your life negatively and anchor you down, choking your progress, the biggest threat to your improvement can be YOU. It is so easy to point out everything that is pulling you back and be blind to all the ways you are contributing to how things are not working out and haven't worked out for you yet.

Okay, the economy is taking a hit, yes, your parents could not afford you certain opportunities, you had to drop out of school, you got cheated on, so and so hates you; the list is endless. But can you thoroughly examine yourself and honestly conclude that you are not contributing to your own failures? It is crazy how you can unknowingly be your biggest enemy. The moment you engage in behaviours or actions that do not benefit you, develop you, or build you up, then you’re disadvantaging yourself.

How then are you helping yourself? By drinking daily? Internet porn? Procrastination? Your enemy might go to the lengths of wishing you fail, but you actively take part in your own failure and then find every other reason for your predicaments. So my message to you is this, inasmuch as life can get in the way, messing up your grand plans, and circumstances slowing down your progress, check to see if you are not part of the problem. There is certainly nothing you can do about the economy; you cannot change how you were raised or how people treat you but you can CHANGE YOU. It is a concept as old as time, introduced by the ancient stoics and is being advocated for by modern philosophers, writers and motivational speakers: to focus on what you can control, which in most cases is YOU, your mind.

Strive to become a person that can handle life nobly in its favourable and mostly in unfavourable seasons. Set your goals and work towards them, despite your background or the environment you are in. You can turn things around just by focusing on things you have direct control over. The late Jim Rohn, an advocate for personal development suggested working on yourself more than you do on your job and seeing what happens. Writer, James Clear suggests you ask yourself,

"Who is the type of person that can get the outcome I want?" You want to be successful, well, what does a successful person do? Binge watch television shows? Drink themselves unconscious every night? Spend hours searching adult content on the internet? Numb their mind with drugs?

Is the person you are now capable of achieving big things? Can he or she break generational curses and carve out a new path? Sit with yourself and dig deep. Maybe you have been your biggest problem all along. For you to become the person you need to be, you must first unbecome what you are now. And sometimes, if not most times, that is where breakthroughs lie: in becoming and unbecoming.

Now get to work!
