From the medieval era to all the greatest empires ever known in history, all things that have to do with humanity were at least explored if not given more than fair enough attention. However, there is one that l suppose has not yet been given the attention and understanding it needs. Some would argue otherwise but none has brought forward a satisfying definition that exhausts it. Even l for one cannot stand above the rest and say “Here l have brought about the exact meaning of what GROWTH IN HUMANITY is.” The reason being it’s one of the most complex and sensitive issues as it seeks to look more at our psychological aspect of being humans. The one actual school of thought on a normal basis that is said to be globally accepted might look at humanity as a virtue associated with basic ethics of altruism derived from the human condition. It also symbolizes human love and compassion towards each other.
Humanity differs from mere justice in that there is a level of altruism towards individuals included in humanity more so than the fairness found in justice. Humanity, altruism, social intelligence, and the act of love are typically individual strengths while fairness is generally expanded to all. Humanity can be classed as one of the six virtues that are consistent across all cultures. The concept goes back to the development of “humane” or “humanist” philosophy during the Renaissance (with predecessors in the 13th century stressing a concept of basic human dignity inspired by Aristotelianism) and the concept of humanitarian in the early modern period, which resulted in modern notions such as “human rights”. However, to me, that one would only be an attempt to define humanity, not the Growth in Humanity for when we say Growth in Humanity Humanity, l understand it from different aspects.
We as the human race should strive to respect other people’s opinions. First above all not being judgmental over other people for that is one of the most things that has seen us as humans not growing emotionally. We spend much of our time trying to figure out what someone has done and how we are going to criticize that, much emphasis is placed on the negative. I for one am made to understand that one should not assume the responsibility that is not due to them hence, the very same moment we stop assuming God’s responsibility to judge we would have made our first step of Growth in Humanity. We as the human race should strive to respect other people’s opinions and choices for in life everyone is not going to think alike, we should learn to co-exist and support one another.
Humanity in its full capacity will take quite a lot of years but a journey of a thousand years starts now. We need to quickly realize that we all have different views and that doesn’t mean we should become enemies. The consequences of such a thought are quite clear for one to see when the Geo-politics and the current situations in the Middle East are observed. They alone spell it all, we have not yet achieved Growth in Humanity but only Growth in other aspects, and that always makes us an enemy of each other for if Growth in Humanity had been achieved the world would have been at peace. We have lost the face of humanity hence the reason why we no longer have the shame to commit different atrocities against one another.
It’s a shame that in this present day world and century someone out there is not certain whether or not they will see the sunrise tomorrow because of human conflicts such as wars among others, young girls no longer have the courage to face the world because their rights are undermined. All their life, it has always been fear be it from rape or any other suppression, and that alone disqualifies us as a global village to say we have grown in humanity. In the Zimbabwean culture, we say Growth in Humanity is mostly associated with respect or ubuntuism to which we as the human race do not have, quite a shame so to say.
At the end, this leaves me with a question again that cannot be fully explained, “Is Humanity a value given the way we humans have turned against one another based on color, race, sex, etc.?” If humanity is a value accepted by the majority around the globe then one would not need to need to seek the audience of a financial analyst to realize that Humanity has lost its value, in fact, more than that which it’s worth.
