Down to earth

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

By Trevor Mukarati Nothing humbles people like death. It's funny how we try to prove how tough we're yet there's only one thing that shows us that we are human and mortals, and that is death. Most level-headed people spend their time making memories, building homes, loving their families, and building their communities before death ends their fate. Some choose to live it up to nothing, no plans no principles, no direction, no focus hence they just bump into whatever comes in their way, and that is unfortunate because life is not fair if you do not care.

Nothing says human more than humility. There are many forms of death one can experience before the permanent departure. “Whatever is not growing is Dead” highlighted Senior Reverent H. Mazonde in his sermon on Death and transformation. To summarize, the man of God made it clear that God in His nature was humble and loving enough to allow His Son to become human to save mankind. This was a very selfless sacrifice and is a direct lesson to the Christian community that to become Christlike, we have to be humble. That's how the whole Christian doctrine can be fully implemented. I'm quite aware that the world is a diverse ethnic community. But worldwide religions agree on a certain aspect and that's the concept of love. It cannot be separated from humility because for one to extend love to another, they have to be humble enough to meet the place of one's needs. Humility attracts goodness, it creates a good environment for growth and transformation.

I was once a person who lived a life of compromising and that lifestyle consumed a lot of my time that I could have used to grow up. On the positive side, I don't want to cry over spilled milk. I would rather consider that period as a learning curve. Every year I plan what I will work towards achieving and this helps me set a pace on which I have to accelerate and accomplish my set of goals. Over the past years, I've evolved from pushing some of my yearly plans into another year. The problem with that habit is that it slows down growth and paves way for procrastination which is not a good thing in a journey of transformation. Above every other thing, through observations and life experiences, I have learned the importance of humility.

My grandfather once told me a story of a rich celebrity who traveled half the earth showcasing his wealth and bragging about him being everything the world needed. He used to offend people with his famous speech, “He doesn't need nobody, money got him covered.” The celebrity had a dream of traveling the whole world to spread his selfish ideology of an antisocial life. So he traveled from the United States of America to Asia and Europe. Unfortunately, he didn't make it past Africa as his plane ran out of fuel and had to land in Egypt. Since he was a famous person, people knew him and hated him for his introverted kind of life. Nobody wanted to help him. Assuming he had no pride but humbleness in him, he could have had a multitude of helpers.

The lesson from this story is that no one is an island. We need one another, so there's no need for us not to choose humility. We have to live humbly, plan our lives and commit our efforts to transform into better and successful people. We ought to interact with one another with empathy and humility.
